GolfCalculator

The GolfCalculator app calculates your Score Differential from the number of strokes. And vice versa.
It can be useful when preparing for a round of golf. In fact, it encapsulates the handicap tables that show the number of strokes you need to play to par.

The app only needs the Course Rating (CR), the Slope Rating (SR) and your handicap before the round. It then shows the number of strokes and the corresponding Score Differentials side by side.

Strokes vs Score Differential

The Score Differential that you reach after playing a round of golf depends on the number of strokes and the difficulty of the golf course. When you play a 9-holes course, your handicap also (slightly) affects the Score Differential.
In the GolfCalculator app, the number of strokes and corresponding Score Differential are shown side by side. It initially shows the number of strokes and the Score Differential that correspond with your handicap. You can change either side of the two-wheel table; the other side will then scroll to the new value.
The little ‘reset’ button puts both wheels back to their initial values.

Course Difficulty

The difficulty of a golf course is defined by two values: the Course Rating (CR) and the Slope Rating (SR). The Course Rating is the average number of strokes that scratch players (i.e. players with handicap 0) would need to complete the course. The Slope Rating says something about how difficult the course is for a bogey player (i.e. a player with a handicap around 18) compared to a scratch player. The SR ranges from 55-155 with a higher number being a more difficult course. The average SR is 113.

Handicap Tables

The Course Rating (CR) and the Slope Rating (SR) can typically be found in Handicap Tables on the golf club’s website and/or on posters at the golf club venue. There are usually multiple handicap tables; one for each course, number of holes, tee and gender. They each have their own CR and SR values. Just copy the values of the applicable table to this app.

Disclaimers

  • The calculations in this app are only valid when you play exactly 9 or exactly 18 holes.
  • The number of strokes are the corrected number of strokes, i.e. with a maximum of a double bogey per hole.
  • The Score Differential that is calculated by this app may not always be used directly in the calculation of your new handicap. Sometimes the system can (automatically) make corrections, e.g. because of weather conditions (pcc).

Handicap

Your handicap may change after a round of golf and after submitting your score card. To calculate your new handicap, you’ll need the score cards of the last twenty qualifying rounds. This app has no access to your personal score cards and therefore cannot calculate the change in handicap for you.

Formulas

These are the formulas that are used to calculate the Score Differentials from the number of strokes, and the CR and SR. When playing 9 holes, the handicap is used too.
Note that the second part of the formula to calculate the Score Differential for 9 holes is not officially confirmed by any Golf Association, but is the result of analyzing many score cards. It may thus be subject to change.
(The factor pcc (Playing Conditions Calculation) may be added to your score card by the automated golf scoring system and can affect the Score Differentials that are used in the calculation of your handicap. It is usually 0, but can be between -1 and +3.)
